Xbox Repair – Don’t Do Anything Until You Know Your Options
Is your Xbox 360 freezing up? Getting the red ring of death error lights? Welcome to a growing international club of frustrated Xbox gamers.
Knowing that many other people share your problem doesn't help you much, so your Xbox repair options is the topic of this article. In no special order, they are:
1.) You can send it back to Microsoft for repair or replacement. If your Xbox 360 is still under warranty, they will do this for free. If not, it will cost you a well over a hundred dollars.
If for any reason your console was opened, Microsoft will not honor the warranty. Whether or not you were attempting self repair or had other reasons that seem justifiable, your warranty is void.
The Xbox replacement process normally takes a great deal of time. Expect about 2 weeks to be the average replacement time. There's a specified packing routine that Microsoft wants you to follow when you return your Xbox.
2.) You can try to wet-nurse your console back to health. If this is the first or second ring of death problem with your machine, then there probably hasn't been any real heat damage. Further ring of death freeze-ups might be avoided by keeping your Xbox cool when it's in use.
Getting too hot is the primary reason for the ring of doom shutdowns. The cooling vents should be kept open and clear of dirt, dust, or obstructing materials. Run your Xbox 360 in an environment that is open and well ventilated. Limit console use to less than 3 or 4 hours.
Note that if you're getting repeated ring of death shutdowns, then the damage has already been done. It may not be possible to avoid the ring of death by trying to keep your Xbox cool. If your machine has had significant heat damage, things will get progressively worse with time.
3.) You can repair it yourself. Before you go through with this option, I should remind you of what I'd mentioned before that opening your console voids your warranty. If your warranty is expired or voided, then you're free to work on your Xbox.
Doing your own repair can be intimidating or may sound complicated. But with the right information and some common household tools, it's very doable. There's a lot of information on the Internet about this both free and paid.
The downside of free info is the amount of research that you will have to do. There's too much bad advice out there and it takes time to sort this all out.
There are a number of paid instructional guides available that will show you exactly how to fix your Xbox yourself. Make sure that there's a guarantee of some kind. Unlike the free information out there, the guarantee introduces some accountability and thus improves your chances of getting information that actually works without damaging your Xbox. It also helps if the guide provides instruction in both video and text formats.
With a bit of luck, one of these options will work for your situation so that you can enjoy your gaming again.
